Community Leadership Toolkit
INTRODUCTION TO THE TOOLKIT FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSThe Toolkit for Community Leaders is intended to inform, inspire and guide those who are interested in making their communities more active, creative and engaged and are serving or supporting those in a community leadership role (e.g. managers, administrators, practitioners, elected officals, volunteers, etc.). The Toolkit is divided into two main parts:
Section One provides the context for community governance within an increasingly complex and demanding environment. Leadership development may require a shift in thinking and practice across organizational boundaries and sectors. Section Two describes the community-planning framework facilitated through a community development perspective. Steps one to five outline how to engage and build the capacity of our communities and how we can help refocus the way we work together. Relationships bring individuals together to create opportunities for positive change and for collective and collaborative learning. Stronger linkages between community members and aligned service delivery will be fostered when everyone has a common language, purpose, and approach. Community development is not about finding one size that fits all. Rather, it is a circular process that may not always have a clear beginning or end.The planning framework enables a community to assess where they might be situated on the circle and which steps will need to be taken to continue building capacity and moving forward. Section Three highlights the importance of community facilitation/leadership in building active, creative, engaged and healthier communities. Community leaders play a key role in facilitating this critical outcome of enhanced quality of life and overall health. Section Four expands on how recreation, parks, arts and culture are strengthening leadership, collaboration and innovation in Alberta’s ACE Communities and how they are measuring success along their diverse journeys. This last section also includes information about:
Section Five provides two graphic models, which can be used to inform community conversations about the active Creative Engaged Communities initiative. |
