GREEN TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN – OPPORTUNITIES FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES
The next RTAB Video-Conference (VC) Learning Event will take place on Thursday, June 24, 2010, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The proposed topic is: GREEN TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN – OPPORTUNITIES FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES. Please see the DRAFT agenda for the suggested outline. Due to recent changes in cost structure for Video-Conference (VC) services at the Business Link, and the limited RTAB budget, we have been exploring other potential VC service providers. We are pleased to announce that iCCAN has agreed to provide the VC services for RTAB’s next learning event on a complimentary basis. This will allow all of us to “test drive” iCCAN’s services, as we continue to explore our options. iCCAN, stands for: Innovative Communities Connecting & Networking. iCCAN is a groundbreaking project that creates access to learning through networked videoconference sites across Alberta. We have asked iCCAN to be the first presenter at the June 24 Learning Event, so that RTAB members may have an opportunity to learn more about their services. Physical Activity Forum
Does the Built Environment Influence Health?: Challenging the influence of the built environment on sedentary living The Alberta Centre for Active Living, Mount Royal University and the Healthy Communities Association of Lethbridge and Area are proud to co-sponsor this important half-day Physical Activity Forum in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge. The recent literature in public health and health promotion implies that the built environment influences physical activity and through that, individual health. Although this concept seems reasonable, we need to be able to test it. Testing means linking physical activity and health to physical geography, and through that to measures of the built environment. The geographic data is limited in the health-based literature and is currently spread across many fields. Many of these fields – including elements of planning, design-behaviour, and applied geography research – are not tailored to describing physical activity patterns. This presentation will address the challenges of including the study of physical activity patterns in the context of disciplines where there is little history of doing this. Dr. Doyle-Baker will make particular reference to the relationship between sedentary behaviour and the built environment. Calgary: May 26, 2010 Lethbridge: June 1, 2010 Edmonton: June 4, 2010

On the Bright Side: RDI Conference
The 2010 Rural Development Institute (RDI) and Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation (CRRF) annual policy conference will be held at the Royal Oak Inn & Suites in Brandon, Manitoba October 14-16, 2010. Across Canada, beyond the city boundaries, there are successes with projects, approaches, and policy. Challenges are being defined, plans prepared, and successes evident and measured. Rural Canada is working to bring together examples, practices, and research as evidence. Practitioners, leaders, decision makers, and academics with local to international interests are making a difference socially, environmentally, economically, and with technology. Some are making headway, advancing with innovations, adding value to resource activities, finding new markets, and welcoming immigrants. Financial institutions, member organizations, and foundations are stepping up and making a difference across rural Canada. These and other responses give a glimpse of what’s on the brighter side of rural Canada. Sharing their pathways based on scenarios, projections, and trends of policy, programs, projects, and practices are critical for others pursuing the brighter sides of rural. This conference features examples of those actively designing rural futures – some do it yourself while others plan, and some are partnering. They are building on and enhancing existing infrastructure, navigating success by discovering and making better use of social, environmental, and economic assets, and finding new ways to engage and enspirit people to sustain rural places. For this conference, looking on the bright side means emphasizing what’s working and describing a fuller range of activities that form pathways to many different futures in rural areas. We are inviting proposals for presentations, panel discussions, and posters that purposefully emphasize what's working and pathways to a future. Deadline for the first call for presentation and poster abstracts is April 15, 2010. For more information please contact rdi@brandonu.ca or 204.571.8515.

Shaping Healthy Active Communities Toolkit
The Heart and Stroke Foundation has developed a toolkit to help individuals and organizations who are interested in making their communities more supportive of physical activity through active, healthy community design. Active, healthy community design strategies – such as good public transit, well-maintained parks, and safe, efficient walking and cycling networks − make it easier to get the physical activity Canadians need to promote heart health, prevent stroke and maintain a healthy lifestyle. With Canada’s high rates of physical inactivity and obesity in adults and children, it is more important than ever to build active, healthy design supports into local environments. Residents and community organizations can play an important role in making this happen. The toolkit includes information on: How community design affects heart health What works in active, healthy community design Local planning processes and opportunities for community input Tips and tools for taking action to encourage active, healthy design in your own community Canadian communities that are implementing active, healthy design What the Heart and Stroke Foundation is doing to support active, healthy design

PERFORMING THE WORLD 2010: Can Performance Change the World?
Call For Proposals PERFORMING THE WORLD 2010: Can Performance Change the World? The sixth Performing the World conference will be held in New York City from Thursday, September 30 through Sunday, October 3, 2010. The theme of this year’s conference is: “Can Performance Change the World?” With this theme, we ask performance activists and scholars to reflect on and address the political aspects of their performance work; at the same time, we invite social change activists to reflect on and address the performance aspects of their political activities. We are looking for proposals —for panels, workshops, performances, demonstrations, installations, etc. — that address this overarching question. The sponsors of Performing the World — the East Side Institute for Group and Short Term Psychotherapy and the All Stars Project, Inc. — are based in New York City. For decades, both organizations have worked to create a performance-oriented culture and community, in conscious and direct relationship to progressive social change. Our activities involve all neighborhoods and social strata in New York City, and have created an international network of connections. We envision Performing the World 2010 as a three-day “performance of conversation” with people from all over the world — scholars and researchers; teachers, therapists, social workers and community organizers; doctors and other health workers; theatre and other performance artists; union activists and business leaders; economists and political activists — on the subject of performance and the transformation of the individual, the community, and the world. The question “Can Performance Change the World?” suggests many themes and topics. Here are a few: -Does performance contribute to people seeing the world in new ways? -Play, performance and learning in and outside of school -Community, therapy and community therapy -Playing at work and working at play -New health care performances for connecting mind and body -Therapy, performance and emotional growth -How is the economy performing? -What does performing on stage have to do with performing off-stage? -Group creativity and social change -Performance, activism and revolution Proposal submission forms are available at www.performingtheworld.org. Proposals are due March 1, 2010. Conference Fees (fees are for the entire conference; there is no day rate) Before July 1, 2010: US$205 After July 1, 2010: US$235 A key part of the Performing the World experience is the person-to-person connection — building new relationships with people from around the globe. If you need a place to stay during the conference, our International Host Committee will make every effort to find you one in the home of a New Yorker. Housing request forms are available on the website. Additional information about the conference, and forms for registration, housing and financial aid can be found at www.performingtheworld.org. For any questions please contact conference producer Madelyn Chapman at mchapman@eastsideinstitute.org or 212-941-9400, ext 385.
