The Hills Are Alive Music & Dance Cultural Fest
Historic Red River Cart Trek 2010

“The Hills are Alive” Music and Dance Cultural Fest is a four day festival highlighting music, dance and cultural workshops featuring instruction in fiddle, guitar, mandolin, piano, drumming, bagpipes, jigging and square dancing. Participants may also take in the artisan area featuring instruction in sash finger weaving, drum making, Metis flower beadworking, moccasin making and capote making. There is a crafting area providing instruction in a variety of native crafts such as dreamcatchers, medicine wheels, medicine bags, loom beading, and friendship bracelets. A cultural display of artifacts and interpreters will be set up highlighting a Metis educational display area with Metis Elders teaching Michif and a Metis card game called ‘La Barouche’.

For the younger participants, our youth coordinators will be hosting a native games area. These musical workshops and cultural activities are uniquely housed in tipis and
welcome; $10 admission at the door.

To kick off the festival a historic Red River Cart Trek is planned to recognize 2010 as the ‘Year of the Métis’, and provide a unique look into our history and the contributions Métis have made to the area.

Opening ceremonies will be held at Fort Walsh, SK on June 7, 2010 with activities planned throughout the day. Participants on the trek have the opportunity to relive life from the
1870’s travelling via Red River Cart and horseback through the beautiful Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park from Fort Walsh, SK with an over-night stay at the historic Reesor Ranch, then on to Elkwater, AB. The two day trek then accumulates into the four day music and dance cultural fest.

This event is an excellent interactive learning experience for everyone to attend and is coordinated by the Miywasin Society of Aboriginal Services, with special thanks to Fort Walsh National Historic Park and Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.

Cart Trek registration fee: $75; Cultural Fest Registration fee (4 days): $100 or $35/day.
