Job opportunity with ACE Communities
Title: ACE Community Coach (contract position)
Type of Contract: 12 Coaching Days per Community
Duration: August 2011 – August 2013
Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of the ACE Community Coach is to support the enhancement of quality of life in rural communities and their capacity as a diversity friendly community by strengthening community leadership, innovation, and collaboration through recreation, parks, arts, culture and heritage.
ACE Community Coaches do this by (1) strengthening local leadership by providing a variety of supports and services to a team of ACE leaders within a community in order to assist them in implementing (2) a short term project or initiative and (3) a long term, community driven plan that addresses quality of life in their community as it relates to being a diversity friendly community.
The ACE Community Coach uses his or her skills, knowledge and experience to apply a situational response to each community and their ACE leaders. As a result they would typically use a combination of community development support, facilitation, informal mentoring, and coaching to support the team of local ACE leaders.
This position will involve coaching one or more communities that include: Carstairs, Grande Cache, Jasper, and Rocky Mountain House.
Accountability:
Overall, the ACE Community Coach is accountable to the ACE Creative Cultural Liaison and ACE Operations Team. The ACE Community Coach is also accountable to the local community leaders and community (s) they are directly supporting.
Reporting & Resolutions:
Reporting on the communities being supported by the ACE Community Coach is done by forwarding updates to the Creative Cultural Liaison and External Evaluation Consultant via methods identified in "duties and responsibilities". The ACE Community Coach will engage at different times with the ACE Director, Community Liaison, External Evaluation Consultant, Knowledge and Technology Manager, Community Development Manager and other ACE Contractors.
Resolutions can be sought via the Creative Cultural Liaison and/or ACE Director. The Community Liaison will forward issues to the appropriate team member.
Outcomes to Achieve:
SUPPORT LOCAL ACE LEADERS
● Become oriented to the assigned community and the local ACE leaders.
● Be a conduit and reinforce that local leaders have an understanding of:
1. the ACE initiative
2. building capacity as a diversity friendly community
3. a community development process
4. the ACE tools and resources (e.g. http://www.acecommunities.ca www.a,celeaders.ca)
5. the ACE Community Change Model (Change Model Link)
6. the three paths to an ACE Community
7. the Community Leadership Self-Assessment Tool
8. the Scanning Tool
9. Toolkit for Community Leaders
● Participate in monthly ACE leadership conference calls, ARPA programs and resources etc.
● Support the development of a locally-driven and owned process that is collaborative in nature, and focused on citizen involvement to advance a community's capacity as a diversity friendly community through: (1) development of local leadership, (2) a short term project or initiative and (3) a long term, community driven plan that addresses diversity.
● Provide assistance to the local leaders as they implement the “Community Change Model” and its various components. This will likely include an ignite event, a meeting where the scanning tool is applied, a community building workshop, etc.
● Encourage an ongoing focus on long term, sustainable outcomes.
● Maintain ongoing contact with local leaders (minimum of one or two phone calls per month, on site visits where appropriate).
CONTRIBUTE TO LEADERSHIP OF THE ACE INITIATIVE
● Support evaluation efforts by (1) ensuring debrief and data collection tools and any meeting notes are completed and uploaded to the ACE intranet (http://www.aceleaders.ca), (2) completing community updates, and (3) participating in evaluation meetings and calls.
● Share local learnings, stories, and issues on an ongoing basis.
● Share resources and opportunities from other sources that may be relevant.
● Help in the creation of a 'Diversity Friendly Communities' checklist
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficient knowledge and experience in the following areas:
● diversity/inclusion, community recreation, community development and/or health promotion, or related fields
● program and strategy development
● an understanding of recreation and parks, arts and culture delivery systems
● able to deal with conflict and conflict resolution
● familiarity with applicable grant programs and other resources
● interest and experience in rural development with a focus on quality of life enhancement
● able to build relationships and coordinate activities with a broad variety of community members and disciplines
● able to facilitate various community processes and meetings (for the purposes of engagement, planning, information, education, motivation)
● maintain reports, presentations, correspondence and other related materials
● an understanding of the importance of the new digital workplace and collaborative initiatives
● an openness to learning and utilizing Internet and online technology with a goal to engage stakeholders who might not otherwise be fully engaged
Personal characteristics and skills that include:
● a willingness to embrace inclusion, empowerment, transparency, and ongoing learning
● creative, confident and enthusiastic
● strong written and verbal communication skills
● able to work independently with minimal supervision and make independent judgments based on a variety of situations
● flexibility and openness in working with communities and local leaders at the readiness the community and leaders demonstrate
● proactive with ability to work independently in a team environment.
● commitment to being part of a community of practice for ongoing learning and sharing.
Qualifications:
● Degree minimum, degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies preferred (or equivalent)
● Minimum 10 years community recreation/community development/diversity experience
● A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
● Familiarity and a willingness to use web-based technology for collaborative communication
Independence/Decision Making:
Position will require creativity, self initiative and working independently
Supervision and Evaluation:
●receives overall direction from the ACE Director in collaboration with the external evaluation consultant and the ACE Creative Cultural Liaison
● work is reviewed for attention to quantity and quality of meeting outcomes, interpersonal relations and community satisfaction
