Learn More by Hosting a Community Building Workshop!

Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) is seeking rural communities across Alberta who are interested in hosting a regional ACE Communities workshop entitled: “Community Building for an Active, Creative and Engaged Alberta”.

As the result of generous support by Rural Alberta’s Development Fund (RADF), EnCana, and Canwest, the workshop will be offered at no charge to participants with the option of purchasing a “Toolkit for Community Leaders” for $65. Participants will be asked to register in advance with the host community and to indicate whether or not they wish to purchase a Toolkit.

Workshop Outcomes:
The one day workshop is designed to assist participants to:

1. Learn more about what it means to be an ACE community
2. Gain an understanding of community leadership and community building
3. Access a framework for applying a community development approach
4. Connect like-minded individuals and communities who are interested in enhancing quality of life
5. Learn more about resources that are available to your community through ARPA and ACE Communities
6. Generate excitement and inspire leaders to take action.

What’s in it for your Community?
Being selected as a host for this community building will provide your community with an opportunity to:
• Share its hosting and conference services
• Showcase their community
• Build leadership skills
• Enhance local opportunities for regional networking and collaboration
• Access funding of $30 per participant for the workshop fee to offset the facility and refreshment costs incurred (breaks and lunch)
• Two “Toolkits for Community Leaders” (Value $65/each).

Dates:
Workshop dates are flexible but it is anticipated they will be held between November 2009 and March 2010.

Workshop Participants:
This workshop is open to those who are part of what is being described as the emerging “quality of life sector”. As the host you are encouraged to invite participants from a variety of sectors representing a broad perspective and involvement in the community – business owners, elected officials, youth, volunteers, practitioners working in recreation, health, social services, justice, education, tourism, arts, culture, heritage, etc.

Locations:
Currently, ARPA and ACE Communities are seeking 5-6 communities from across the province of Alberta.  While you are preparing for this possible hosting opportunity, working regionally with other partners is encouraged as the tour is committed to providing access to all regions of the province. The application deadline is Friday, October 16th at noon. Notification of acceptance will be provided by Friday, October 23rd.

Responsibilities of Host Communities:
• Engage a broad audience across sectors and across the regional area to participate
• Provide a location for hosting the event with attendance of up to 50 participants
• Participate in pre-workshop planning e.g. actively promote the workshop (templates provided), organize registrations, arrange refreshments
• Take part in the workshop
• Participate in a debrief of the process and event

The ACE Communities initiative, spearheaded by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), is designed to enhance quality of life in rural Alberta by strengthening community leadership, collaboration, and innovation through recreation, parks, arts, culture, and heritage. Rural communities of all sizes are considered including cities, villages, hamlets, or counties. Unfortunately, Calgary and Edmonton are not eligible for partnering.

Thank you for your time and interest in “Community Building for an Active, Creative and Engaged Alberta”. We look forward to hearing from you about your community/region!  If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Herchmer at bherchmer@aceleaders.ca or learn more about ACE Communities by visiting www.acecommunities.ca.
