KidSport is looking for short term sport instructors for Aboriginal communities across Alberta. Closing date is July 15.
KidSport Alberta will be hosting 3 one day ‘sport sampler’ events in Aboriginal communities across northern Alberta from August 4-7, 2011. These events will provide youth aged 8-18 with an opportunity to try out a variety of different sport activities, as well as receive a healthy lunch and information on the KidSport program. Funding for this program has been provided by program partner Cenovus Energy.
Purpose:
To promote the values of KidSport by providing quality sport instruction to Aboriginal youth in 3 rural communities between August 4-7, 2011. KidSport believes that no child should be left on the sidelines and that ALL should have the opportunity to participate in organized sport. KidSport does this by providing registration fee support to youth 18 and under, and by promoting the positive benefits of participation in organized sport.
Job Description:
• Work in a team of 4-5 to deliver a series of 1-day events in Aboriginal communities between August 4-7, 2011.
• Plan and execute sport stations for youth of a variety of ages and skill levels.
• Work with local on-site youth workers and volunteers to set up stations, organize youth and gather equipment.
• Develop lesson plans for the assigned sport station(s).
• Lead youth through sport stations, ensuring that all participants are having a meaningful and enjoyable experience.
• Advocate on behalf of sport and the KidSport program.
• Liaison between local staff, KidSport Alberta Aboriginal Connections Coordinator and program participants
Nature of Supervision Given/Received:
• Reports directly to the Aboriginal Connections Coordinator with KidSport Alberta.
• Instructors will also receive and provide direction from local on-site youth workers and recreation staff.
• Sport Instructors may be required to provide direction to local volunteers and other helpers.
Qualifications:
Knowledge/Work experience requirements:
• Passion and knowledge of sport.
• Experience as an athlete, coach or instructor in one or more of the following sports: basketball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball.
• Experience in leading youth through drills, activities and games with the goal of skill development and fun.
• Experience working with youth aged 8-18 with a variety of skill levels.
• Awareness of the opportunities and challenges faced by Aboriginal youth is an asset.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
Personal Qualifications & Attributes:
• Works well in a team environment.
• Good communicator with youth and adult peers.
• Passion for sport and wellness.
• Organized and strong attention to detail.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Mature and reliable.
• A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
• All successful applicants will be required to provide a criminal record check.
Education Requirements/Certifications:
• Education related to sport, physical activity, recreation preferred.
• Current CPR & First Aid.
• Valid class 5 Albert Driver’s License an asset- applicants may be required to provide a drivers abstract
Availability:
• Sport Instructors must be available from the morning of Thursday, August 4th to the evening of Sunday August 7th.
• Sport Instructors must also be available for a 1 hour evening orientation at the end of July (date TBD).
• Events will take place in northern Alberta Aboriginal communities, and as such instructors will be required to spend 3 nights away from home (KidSport Alberta will arrange and cover all accommodations, meals and transportation expenses)
Compensation: $500 honorarium
