Here are the notes for the conference call that happened on August 5th at 10:00 am for practitioners responsible for delivering Aboriginal recreation, sports, arts, culture and heritage programs and services. Janet explained that we’re looking for votes to help us win the $100,000 prize for our ARTS Tour to Aboriginal communities.
b) Pre-conference Aboriginal Session at the ARPA conference has been confirmed for Thursday, October 21st – $99 registration . Full details regarding the conference are available at http://2010.arpaonline.ca/
.c) FITS (Facility Inventory Tracking System)
It was explained that FITS is a database accessible via the Internet that is designed to collect, analyze and report on all aspects of community recreation and parks facilities in Alberta. It provides the opportunity for municipal partners and allied stakeholders to engage in a common, integrated and comprehensive inventory of community recreation and parks facilities across the province. It was also explained that entering data is optional when concerns were expressed that a community may not want to share financial information. It was stressed that the collective information is what will help build a case for more government investment in infrastructure.

d) Kids at Hope
Kids at Hope is a system of beliefs designed to engage an entire community to believe that all kids are kids-at-hope rather than kids-at-risk. Encourages kids to think about success in terms of home and family, community service, education as well as career. Now piloting 10 communities. Will be doing 2 day training in Camrose at the end of August for the school board there as well as in Grande Prairie August 30 and 31st.

f) SOGO active website (sogoactive.com) and ‘Can you fill these shoes?”
A youth initiative for 13 -19 years old. Phase two being launched August 10 to get kids more active on their own terms. Founded by Coca Cola Canada with ParticipACTION. Delivered in Alberta by ARPA. Website encourages registration as a community host and dialogue with youth to discuss their interests. First phase distributed $50,000. Second phase will have the same amount. Campaign is being launched called “Can you fill these shoes”? Youth being encouraged to create challenges for their peers.
g) High Five
High Five is a quality assurance session for those who work with children to ensure quality interaction.High Five Sport is being offered as a preconference session at the ARPA conference. Presenter will be Dr. Stephen Norris who is an expert on sport for life.
3) Update from Indigenous Sport Council Alberta (ISCA)
North American Indigenous Games in Milwaukee have been cancelled. A meeting will be held this month in Winnipeg to discuss hosting in 2011. Playdowns will continue.

Shelly Hamelin from Treaty 8 is the new northern representative for ISCA .
